BVI to Host ICT Roadshow in May
Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, RA and Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), Secretary General Ms. Bernadette Lewis unveiled plans for the BVI Road Show during a press briefing held on Thursday 11th Februray 2010, at the Moorings Mariner Inn.

Speaking at the press briefing the Minister said "The roadshow is good for the BVI. The BVI relies extensively on financial services. More than 50% of the revenue from the treasury comes from financial services and we have to be able to provide relevant telecommunications services to continue to operate effectively for these businesses," the minister said.

"The BVI has already begun to reap the benefits from this roadshow; we have already embarked on plans to host an internet exchange point. My Government stands behind it and it is something that we are looking forward to and I see no reason why it is not going to take place very shortly," Minister Fraser said.

"The mandate of the roadshow is to raise public awareness and educate the Government and citizens of the region with the message of the importance of information and telecommunication technologies," Secretary General said as she began her remarks.

"In the Caribbean as a region, we tend to be consumers of the technology, we do not create, but if we are really going to derive the full benefit of the technology that you invest so heavily in there is a need for innovation in how we approach and incorporate the technology in what you do," Ms. Lewis pointed out.

Programme Director and a member of the panel that unveiled plans for the BVI road show, Mr. Bevil Wooding spoke on the uniqueness of each road show. "The road show surrounds the theme Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for everyone. To achieve this we have to tailor it to the specific needs of the country," Mr. Wooding stated.

Closing the press briefing, local coordinator, Mrs. Karia Christopher petitioned for community involvement in the road show. "We want to make sure that the public knows that this road show is for them, for individuals, bankers, entrepreneurs and even the man on the street. We want to create that avenue of excitement as it pertains to technology, so this is a step the minister is taking to ensure that the BVI people are empowered to reach their greatest technological potential," the coordinator concluded.

The ICT Road show is a series of country visits across the region, designed to foster a spirit of innovation in the development of Information and Communication Technology-based (ICT) practical solutions, raise awareness and encourage harmonization of efforts in the adoption of ICT solutions for inclusive economic and social development.
